Omake 5

“You fancy yourself, don’t you?” sneered the big lad next to Jaromka as they trained.

“Well, yes, actually,” said Jaromka, who knew a fight was inevitable. “My father prepared me well.”

“Oh, and who’s this precious father of yours? My father is an ataman, and leads an hundred men, and he’ll be training us here; you’d better not show off or he’ll put you in your place.”

“My father’s a shovel-master, and builds the ways for your father’s men to travel. And defends them. He was part of the shovel hedgehog which stopped the Russians.”

The big youth scowled. It was a famous occasion, and anyone who had taken part in it was feted for their courage.

“Well, it doesn’t make you any good.”

“Any more than your father makes you any good,” said Jaromka, calmly.

The boy was spoiling for a fight, and was angered that a smaller boy should not fall in to his leadership. It was inevitable, so turning a soft answer was no good.

“I’ll sort you out later.”

“You can try, cherub,” said Jaromka.

I'll expand this considerably when Jaromka gets there...

  1. And now I am curious why the young braggart did not recognise Wiśniowiecki on sight. Is this scene when Jaromka was in the Sich? Where is Michałek?

    1. Jaromka hasn't been widely portrayed like his father and grandfather, and he has reddish hair. This is when he first goes to the Sich to train at 14, and yes, he's visited before, but the other lad may not have done. It being a bit of a rite of passage. Michas is off building roads and canals somewhere, he'd be 19 or 20 so probably someone's adjutant. I will have to work out what else is happening in the world to reveal through Jaromka - or Jarema as he will go by, leaving a baby name behind [at least it sounds very like a little boy name to me] - and his experience.

    2. It also sounds as such to me. Although when I was trying to check, I found out that Jaromka is also a name of a tractor - a unique series (about 100 examples) produced in Jarocin in the late sixties. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1092982360743558.1073741866.104857992889338&type=3

    4. Jaromka sounds so both insightful and utterly done already... I suppose he saw *a lot* of posturing at court.

LOL, Jurko's sense of humour at work. May it never fade.
