This is really interesting and makes me feel cold just reading the data. I remember the days before central heating where you had one warm room in the house if you were lucky but this must have been close on unbearable ... I do think we’ve had the Modbury weather of the 14th around our way recently though - mild, dark and cloudy.
ReplyDeleteFascinating. Thanks for publishing.
haha that's me now! We have no central heating and we heat the study so I can work - but having had the chimney swept in the front room I've been burning logs in there.
DeleteModbury tends to be warmer, being down in the southwest but I have noticed some parallels between the weather of 1810 and 2019
Oh dear. How did they collect/record all these data at the time, for each day of all those years, for all these locations? It is rather easy in the age of the internet and satellites, but in 1811...
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I can't do Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion so easily but it does sound rather bad weather. I envy them the comet though.
hah, well they didn't, as such; this is what I have collated from the last ten years of painstaking research reading magazines of the time online, poring through newspaper reports of extreme weather, and reading diaries kept by various country parsons, some of whom have the most attrocious handwriting. Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 30 and half it. I have a conversion table in the book for temperature and pressure but it is a resource for writers, and I already throw books at the wall when they speak of regency misses eating bars of chocolate or checking their wrist watch, so to have someone comment on the weather in celsius and then credit me would leave me incandescent with rage. There were a number of good comets, there was one in 1807 as well, but the near miss of the meteor in 1816 must have been scary [I did a rough calculation of the path of that through newspaper reports and figured out it landed in the sea just N of the Isle of Man, possibly triggering a subsequent earthquake in Scotland]
DeleteI find it fascinating to build a weather chart in my mind's eye where wind direction and pressure is given to 'see' the isobars
This is fascinating, I love reading facts like this. Interesting to see the London temperatures fluctuating quite widely as they have this January. Regards Kim
ReplyDeleteyes, me too, I use my rough version when writing, but I want to get at least the first one out for other people
DeleteI find it fascinating to be able to draw parallels. Also to add extra little snippets like 'so cold the chamberpot froze under the bed'
