Poem: the fugitive

I am not sure where this came from but it wanted to be written.  The first four stanzas still left me confused but now I have some idea who, why where. And maybe it will be the introduction to a book ....

The fugitive

He stood all alone on the crest of the hill
His shape ‘gainst the sunset was stark
Then ere they could raise up their muskets to kill
He was gone downhill into the dark

They sent up a shout and the dogs all gave tongue
The volley was ragged and late
The cry was set up that he was to be hung
And foul vows were made for his fate

Then they mounted with speed and rode over the rise
Through heather and gorse in pursuit
They thundered over the ridge for their prize
Sure he could not elude them on foot.

Onward they thundered, up valley and down
Certain to take him by force
Whilst their quarry lay still on soft grass that had grown
Surrounded by thick walls of gorse

Hollow its centre with rabbit-cropped turf
A ready-made fortress to hide
And deep in his heart he controlled all his mirth
While his enemies went for a ride.

They shouted and called, as if Renard their prey
With a terrible racket and din
And cautiously forth he crept out where he lay
And surveyed the camp where they had been.

There’s forty spare horses at picket left there
And the sumpter train never unpacked
And nary a guard save the Colonel’s grey mare
And soon he was up on her back.

He rode from the camp with the forty spare horse,
Leading the ponies as well
And when they returned he was gone o’er the gorse
And the soldiery damned him to hell.

But he’d made his slow way to his homeland again
At a pace that to horses was kind
And he foreswore the wars with their loss and their pain
For he’d found a trophy to mind.

There’s no greater horse thief in Ireland they say
Than Cormac O’Toole of the gorse
For his prowess in riding and other horseplay
Comes from his bond with the horse.

Poem: day of the dead

The religious side of All Hallows

Day of the Dead

Ring out the bells and slowly toll
The tailors nine that make a man
Celebrate the immortal soul
He has seen his allotted span

Between the worlds the walls are thin
The dead are close to us this day
Candles may light their way within
To guide them so they will not stray

Candle burn and sonorous bell
Sound the sombre song of death
Propitiate the souls and tell
That we recall when they drew breath

Tell the souls and toll the note
The Passing Bell swings in the tower
Now let the Stedman sequence rote
Sing glory for the final hour.

a few random poems

At night all cats are grey

They say at night all cats are grey
Come forth the cats on silent feet
In moonlit monochrome they play
Down from their houses to the street

Come forth the cats on silent feet
To sport in shadows silently
Down from their houses to the street
Secret feline activity

To sport in shadows silently
They hide their lissom bodies sleek
Secret feline activity
In vain mere humans reasons seek

They hide their lissom bodies sleek
In moonlit monochrome they play
In vain mere humans reasons seek
They say at night all cats are grey

The forever game

Danger for fun, you’re just playing the game
Laughing at life and proud of your skill
Playing forever, it’s always the same
Nothing can harm you, you will not take blame
In your eternal search for the thrill
Danger for fun, you’re just playing the game

No-one can reach to your innermost flame
You go where you please and do what you will
Playing forever, it’s always the same
Mercurial man, do you seek for the fame?
Do you yet know what it is to be still?
Danger for fun, you’re just playing the game

Flirting with death and immune to all shame
No time to rest until you’ve had your fill
Playing forever, it’s always the same
Brightly you burn, you will never be tame
Restless your soul you must try to fulfill
Playing forever, it’s always the same
Danger for fun, you’re just playing the game

The mists that play in Farsea Brake

The mists that play in Farsea Brake
Are clammy to the touch
Beware and do not linger late
Or stay to see too much

The lady of the Farsea Wood
With leafy crown’s display
Ensnares the hearts of those who should
Have stayed further away.

Her smile austere on face serene
Demands a pledge of truth
The fairest lady ever seen
Completely without ruth.

No pity lies there in her eyes
No kindness in her gaze
Ready to take the fool or wise
Into her magic haze

The mists that play in Farsea Brake
Will hide a wand’ring soul
If any sleeps, he may not wake
As sorcerous mists enfold

A halloween poem

Upon the day when worlds may meet
The fae will ride again
And souls and spirits are concrete
To meet with mortal men.
Beware, beware their faery wiles
Beware their whispers sweet
Resist the urge lest it defiles
And drags you off your feet.
Heed not the fae and shun their lure
And do not meet their eyes
Survive the night, and just endure
And never heed their lies
For on this night the mortal may be drawn
And stolen bodies with their souls be torn
